Hi.  I’m Phil Merrell.  I live in Boise, Idaho and I currently make mobile apps for the great Boise State University. I started as a designer and webmaster in 2006, but aspired to do more programming and development work. I’ve worked in PHP, Coldfusion, ASP.NET, but  enjoy JavaScript the most.  Since March of 2012 I have worked exclusively with Sencha Touch and Cordova developing the myBoiseState app in addition to other apps currently available in the Apple App Store and Google Play. My blog is primarily focused on hybrid mobile application development.

I believe in the future of the web as a first-class mobile application platform, and strive to show apps deployed using web technologies can be every bit as beautiful and engaging as native apps.

Even more things about me:

Baseball Career

baseballOnce upon a time I played baseball in the Cincinnati Reds organization.  As a pitcher I was drafted in the 4th round out of high school in 1996. I had a low 90s sinking fastball, a great slider and a mediocre change up.  I played 5 minor league seasons and made it to AAA, but never quite got that, “cup of coffee.”  My best season was for the Clinton, Iowa Lumberjacks in 1999 when I led the league in ERA and made the Midwest League All-Star team.  Shortly afterwards I was promoted up to AA where I played for the Chattanooga Lookouts.

Music is a large part of my life. I’ve been playing in bands in the Boise music scene since 2002. Over that time span I have been a part of 5 different bands, released 4 albums (soon to be 5), toured the United States and Europe as a live recording engineer for Built to Spill and played SXSW as a touring guitarist for the band Le Fleur. I currently play in the band, Dark Swallows with my wife, Ivy.  One of my proudest musical accomplishments is recording and mixing a 7″ single for Built to Spill released on record store day 2009.
